VICTORIAN JEWELRY

Victorian jewelry, spanning from 1837 to 1901 during Queen Victoria’s reign, reflects a wide range of styles and sentiments, deeply influenced by the queen’s personal life and the era’s social changes. Early Victorian, or Romantic period jewelry, featured natural motifs like serpents, flowers, and birds, symbolizing love and eternity. As the era progressed into the Mid-Victorian or Grand period, designs became darker and more somber, often incorporating jet, onyx, and garnets to reflect mourning customs following Prince Albert’s death. The Late Victorian, or Aesthetic period, saw a return to lighter, more whimsical designs, with diamonds, seed pearls, and colored gemstones in elegant, often heart-shaped or star motifs. Gold was the dominant metal throughout, with intricate engraving and repoussé work adding texture. Victorian jewelry remains beloved for its historical depth, sentimental value, and romantic symbolism.
